About Carol

Professor Carol Pollock is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney and Lead of the Renal Research Laboratory at the Kolling Institute of Medical Research, Northern Clinical School. An academic nephrologist and renal transplant physician affiliated with Royal North Shore Hospital, she holds qualifications of MB BS, PhD, FRACP, and FAAHMS. With over 480 publications garnering more than 39,500 citations, her research centers on the mechanisms of progressive kidney disease, developing diagnostic tests to predict kidney failure, and advancing new therapies including clinical trials for chronic kidney disease, dialysis, and transplantation. Key projects under her leadership include targeting inflammatory pathways with novel shark-derived antibodies in collaboration with Adalta, limiting kidney scarring in transplantation models with Pharmaxis, non-invasive risk prediction in diabetic and non-diabetic kidney disease supported by foundations, and mitochondrial function normalization with Mitokinin. She has maintained continuous peer-reviewed funding for 28 years from the National Health and Medical Research Council, Australian Research Council, JDRF, Diabetes Australia, and others.

Professor Pollock's career encompasses clinical practice, research, education, and leadership, with landmark contributions as co-author on high-impact studies such as 'Canagliflozin and Renal Outcomes in Type 2 Diabetes and Nephropathy' (New England Journal of Medicine, 2019), 'Intensive Blood Glucose Control and Vascular Outcomes in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes' (New England Journal of Medicine, 2008), and 'Glucose Handling by the Kidney' (Kidney International, 2011). Her influence extends through roles as Chair of Kidney Health Australia, Chair of the NSW Bureau of Health Information, Deputy Chair of the Australian Organ, Tissue and Transplant Authority, and past Chair of the Northern Sydney Local Health District Board (2011-2016). She served as Scientific Chairman of the 2013 World Congress of Nephrology and on the NHMRC Council (2018-2021). Honors include the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2021 for service to medical research, education, science, nephrology, and governance; International Society of Nephrology AN Richards Award (2023); Ruthven Blackburn Medal from the University of Sydney (2023); Haiyan Wang Award from the Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology (2021); Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research Supervision; and Ministerial Award for Excellence in Cardiovascular Research (2014).
