Carole Comerton-Forde is Professor of Finance in the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Sydney, completed between 1997 and 2001 with a thesis titled 'The Microstructure of the Jakarta Stock Exchange,' and a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours from the same institution in 1996. Her academic career spans prominent Australian universities, including her current role since 2021; previously, she served as Professor of Finance at UNSW Business School from 2018 to 2021 and Head of the School of Banking and Finance there in 2017-2018; Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Finance at the University of Melbourne from 2013 to 2017; Professor in the School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Applied Statistics at the Australian National University in 2011-2012; Associate Professor in Finance at the University of Sydney from 2006 to 2010; and Senior Lecturer in Finance at the University of Sydney from 2002 to 2006. Additional appointments include Academic Advisor to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission since 2010, member of the Compliance Committee at Dimensional Fund Advisors Australia since 2021, and Director and Chair of the Membership Research Committee at Plato Partnership since 2019.
Comerton-Forde's research focuses on market microstructure, investigating liquidity provision, dark trading, short selling, closing price manipulation, anonymity in trading, and the effects of market fragmentation, regulation, and technology on trading costs and market quality. She has authored numerous papers in leading journals such as the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and Review of Finance. Key publications include 'Time Variation in Liquidity: The Role of Market-Maker Inventories and Revenues' (Journal of Finance, 2010), 'Dark Trading and Price Discovery' (Journal of Financial Economics, 2015), 'Regulating Dark Trading: Order Flow Segmentation and Market Quality' (Journal of Financial Economics, 2017), and 'Measuring Financial Wellbeing with Self-Reported and Bank-Record Data' (Economic Record, 2022). Her scholarship has accumulated over 3,600 citations with an h-index of 28. Awards include the Dean’s Research Prize and Dean’s Teaching Prize for Street Finance at the University of Melbourne in 2016 and 2017, respectively, and the Best Policy Paper Prize from FIRN in 2012. She serves as Associate Editor for the Review of Finance since 2022 and the Journal of Financial Markets since 2013.
