About Carole

Professor Carole James serves as Professor in the Discipline of Occupational Therapy at the Sydney School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. With qualifications of PhD, MHSc(OT), BSc(OT), and DipCOT, she specializes in occupational therapy applied to workplace settings. Her career includes prior appointment as Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Newcastle.

James's research interests center on occupational health and ergonomics, including psychosocial factors influencing musculoskeletal disorders, posture during prolonged computer use, occupational dust exposure and lung diseases in mining, mental health resilience in nursing and resources sectors, and workplace health promotion for obesity management. She has contributed to the validation and application of the WorkHab functional capacity evaluation protocol. Her scholarly output includes highly cited papers such as "Workplace stress and resilience in the Australian nursing workforce: A comprehensive integrative review" (2020); "Factors that influence the professional resilience of occupational therapists in mental health practice" (2013); "Understanding the pathogenesis of occupational coal and silica dust-associated lung disease" (2022); "The contribution of individual, social and work characteristics to employee mental health in a coal mining industry population" (2017); and "Workplace psychosocial factors and their association with musculoskeletal disorders: a systematic review of longitudinal studies" (2023). With over 2,000 citations across her publications, her work significantly impacts clinical occupational therapy practice, worker safety policies, and industry health programs.
