About Carolyn

Carolyn Crump, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Health Behavior in the Department of Health Behavior at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where her work advances Health Science through public health practice, leadership, and evaluation. She received her PhD in Health Behavior and Health Education with a minor in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1993, MA in Exercise Physiology from the University of Maryland in 1982, and BA in Government and Physical Education from Skidmore College in 1978. Her career trajectory at UNC Chapel Hill includes roles as Research Associate from 1989 to 1993, Research Coordinator from 1994 to 1998, Assistant Professor from 1994 to 2008, and Associate Professor since 2009. Earlier positions encompassed Research Scientist roles at Human Performance Systems, Inc. from 1989 to 1992, University Research Corporation from 1988 to 1989, and Advanced Research Resources Organization from 1982 to 1987, focusing on physical performance standards, medical guidelines, and injury data analysis. She began her professional journey as a Physical Education Teacher and coach from 1978 to 1980.

Dr. Crump's academic interests center on the impact of organizational and environmental factors on health behavior, alongside injury prevention, physical activity promotion, obesity prevention, health disparities, health policy, public health leadership, and practice. She evaluates the Indian Health Services Injury Prevention Program, designed the strategic plan, certification process, grant program, and evaluation for the Be Active North Carolina initiative to increase physical activity and cardiovascular health, and co-developed the Systems Change for Health competency-based training program. As director of UNC Healthy Solutions, she offers strategic planning, program evaluation, facilitation, and feasible outcome monitoring for non-research teams. Key publications include 'Motor vehicle injury prevention in eight American Indian/Alaska Native communities: Results from the 2010-2014 CDC Tribal Motor Vehicle Injury Prevention Program' (Public Health, 2019), 'Child safety and booster seat use in five tribal communities, 2010-2014' (Journal of Safety Research, 2016), 'Reliability and Validity of Two Instruments Designed to Assess the Walking and Bicycling Suitability of Sidewalks and Roads' (American Journal of Health Promotion, 2003), and contributions to worksite health promotion studies. She received the 2018 Gillings Innovations in Teaching Award for integrating new technologies, interactive activities, and creative assessments. Dr. Crump provides technical assistance to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity branch and local fitness councils, and has served on the Eat Smart Move More Leadership Council and North Carolina Women’s Health Report Card Advisory Board.
