Carolyn Hastie, RM, RN, PhD, SFHEA, is a Senior Lecturer in Midwifery in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Griffith University. With over four decades of experience in midwifery practice, education, and service development, she brings extensive expertise to her role. Her qualifications include a PhD, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Midwifery research, Graduate Diploma in Primary Health Care (Grad Dip PHC), Diploma in Teaching (Dip Teach), Registered Midwife (RM), Registered Nurse (RN), and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Hastie serves as Director of the Honours Program in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Brisbane. She convenes and teaches courses in the Graduate Certificate and Master of Primary Maternity Care, working with midwives and other health professionals to develop advanced knowledge and skills for contemporary maternity care. Additionally, she supervises Honours, Masters, and PhD candidates through their full research journey, providing research leadership.
Hastie's research specializations include midwifery, childbearing, birth territory, teamwork, planetary health, birthing psychophysiology, collaboration, attachment, perinatal psychology, and teaching and learning. Her publications have received over 2,091 citations on Google Scholar. Key works encompass 'The development of a rubric for peer assessment of individual group members in the midwifery undergraduate program' (2014), 'Early career midwives' perception of their teamwork skills within the professional birth setting: An exploratory study' (2021), 'Continuity, Not Sector, Drives Maternity Outcomes' (2025), and studies on Australian midwives practicing homebirth without insurance and women's experiences of respectful maternity care. Previously, she held positions as Senior Lecturer in Midwifery at Southern Cross University and Midwifery Manager at Belmont Birthing Service. As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), she contributes significantly to midwifery education and scholarship.
