Dr. Casey Donoven is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Montana State University Northern, located in Havre, Montana. Originally from Kremlin, Montana, Dr. Donoven earned a B.S. in Mathematics with a minor in Physics from Montana State University Bozeman. He subsequently pursued advanced studies abroad, obtaining a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Following his doctoral work, Dr. Donoven held a one-year appointment as Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Bristol in England. He then served three years as Riley Assistant Professor at Binghamton University in upstate New York before joining Montana State University Northern. As an undergraduate in the Honors Program at Montana State University Bozeman, Dr. Donoven received the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship in 2011 for outstanding achievement in mathematics and science. That same year, he participated in the Solar Physics Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at Montana State University Bozeman and was later recognized with the Award for Excellence in Mathematics, mentored by Lukas Geyer.
Dr. Donoven's research specializes primarily in algebra, with particular emphasis on geometric group theory and semigroup theory. Within geometric group theory, his investigations include Thompson's Group V, finite state automata, and the generation of infinite simple groups. In semigroup theory, Dr. Donoven focuses on subsemigroup structures, encompassing the computation of maximal subsemigroups and coverings by subsemigroups. He has presented his work at professional conferences, such as a talk on 3/2-generated semigroups at the Zassenhaus Group Theory Conference in 2021 and contributions noted in American Mathematical Society abstracts. Key publications include 'Infinite 3/2-generated groups' co-authored with Scott Harper and published in the Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society in 2020; 'Conjugate subgroups and overgroups of V_n' with Feyishayo Olukoya in the International Journal of Algebra and Computation in 2020; and 'Some isomorphism results for Thompson-like groups V_n(G)' with Collin Bleak and Julius Jonušas in the Israel Journal of Mathematics in 2017. At Montana State University Northern, Dr. Donoven contributes to faculty committees including the Tutoring Committee and has delivered brown bag lectures on mathematics education topics.
