About Catherine

Dr. Catherine Seymour serves as a consultant endocrinologist in the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, with a 0.3 FTE commitment as documented in 2017 accreditation materials. Affiliated with the University of Melbourne's Melbourne Medical School through the RMH Clinical School, she holds the position of Sub-Dean of the RMH Clinical School. In this capacity, she contributes to clinical education and multidisciplinary diabetes care at a Centre of Excellence for tertiary diabetes services. These services encompass management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus, gestational diabetes, diabetic foot complications, inpatient diabetes oversight, diabetes technology including insulin pumps, and transitioning care for young adults. Her work supports comprehensive patient care across the hospital's City Campus, Royal Park Campus, and affiliations with the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

Dr. Seymour has been instrumental in innovative teaching initiatives. In 2017, as Sub-Dean, she led the development of the Med-E-Sim pilot program in collaboration with Royal Melbourne Hospital staff, including Dr. Vanessa Morgan and Catherine Carbery, Director of the Simulation Centre. This program offered Year 11 and 12 high school students immersive experiences such as tours of the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit, hands-on simulation stations for IV cannulation, suturing, basic life support, and deteriorating patient management, followed by a panel discussion with medical professionals. Aimed at inspiring healthcare careers and fostering community engagement, the pilot proved successful, prompting plans for expansion and funding pursuits. In 2020, she authored an article on RMH Clinical School's adaptations during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting educational innovations. In research, she co-supervised the 2018 graduate project 'Bone health and its long-term predictors post-bone marrow transplantation' in the Department of Medicine (RMH), focusing on risk stratification for bone loss and fractures to guide interventions. Her publications include co-authorship of the 2017 abstract 'Genetic Acromegaly: A tale of two tumours' presented at the Endocrine Society of Australia and Society for Reproductive Biology conference, detailing a rare case from Royal Melbourne Hospital's Diabetes and Endocrinology department, and contributions to the 1996 diabetes inpatient audit featured in the 2021 paper 'Longitudinal prevalence of inpatient diabetes mellitus in an Australian tertiary hospital: 1996–2015'. She is also acknowledged in the 2020 publication on the MED-E-SIM program.
