About Cati

Professor Cati Connell is a Professor of Sociology at Boston University, where she also serves as Director of Undergraduate Studies. She previously served as Director of the BU Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program. Connell earned her PhD in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin in 2010 and joined Boston University as an assistant professor. She was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2017 and later to full professor.

Her research focuses on the intersections of gender, sexuality, and work. Connell’s first book, School’s Out: Gay and Lesbian Teachers in the Classroom, was published in 2015 by University of California Press. Her second book, A Few Good Gays: The Gendered Compromises behind Military Inclusion, was published in 2022 by University of California Press and received the 2023 Outstanding Book Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems. Her current research examines the evolving meanings and uses of “lesbian” as a self-descriptor in the 21st century. Connell has contributed to academic discussions on LGBTQ+ inclusion in educational and military settings through her publications and presentations.
