About Chandra

Professor Chandra S. Bhati, MS, MBBS, serves as Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he holds the positions of Chief of the Division of Transplant Surgery, Abdominal Transplant Director for the Program in Transplantation, and Surgical Director of Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He earned his MBBS from Rajasthan University Dr. S.N. Medical College in 2000, completed his internship at the same institution that year, and advanced his training through residency and a fellowship in Transplant Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Certified by the American Board of Surgery since 2016, Dr. Bhati is also the program director for the ASTS-accredited transplant surgery fellowship at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and instructs faculty in the ASTS minimally invasive donor course.

A distinguished multi-organ transplant surgeon, Dr. Bhati specializes in liver transplant, living donor liver transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, and renal transplantation, with pioneering expertise in performing these procedures robotically, particularly benefiting obese patients. His research focuses on pre- and post-liver transplant sarcopenia, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), normothermic perfusion, enhancing transplant access for individuals with obesity and end-stage liver or kidney disease, and transplant oncology, including liver transplantation for colorectal liver metastases, neuroendocrine tumors, and cholangiocarcinoma. Supported by funding from the Center for Clinical and Translational Research, he serves as principal investigator on multiple clinical trials, has authored over 50 manuscripts and several book chapters, and regularly presents at national and international meetings. Affiliated with University of Maryland Medical Center and UM Faculty Physicians, Inc., Dr. Bhati contributes significantly to advancing transplantation outcomes and surgical innovation.
