About Charalambos

Professor Charalambos Antoniades is the British Heart Foundation Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford, where he also serves as Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, Deputy Head of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Director of the Acute Multidisciplinary Imaging and Interventional Centre (AMIIC), and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He chairs the British Atherosclerosis Society. His research focuses on the crosstalk between adipose tissue and the cardiovascular system, examining mechanisms by which adipose tissue depots influence vascular and myocardial redox state in atherosclerosis. The Antoniades Group conducts translational research using human tissue models, the Oxford Heart Vessels and Fat (ox-HVF) cohort bioresource, advanced imaging including CT and ultrasound, and artificial intelligence approaches to develop biomarkers such as the Fat Attenuation Index (FAI) for detecting coronary inflammation and predicting cardiovascular risk.

Key contributions include leading the CRISP-CT study, published in The Lancet in 2018, which demonstrated the prognostic value of perivascular fat imaging, and subsequent work on radiotranscriptomic signatures and AI-driven risk prediction published in journals including the European Heart Journal, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and Science Translational Medicine. Notable recent publications encompass the ORFAN multicentre cohort study in The Lancet (2024) on inflammatory risk in patients without obstructive coronary disease and studies on perivascular adipose tissue as a source of therapeutic targets (European Heart Journal, 2023). Antoniades has received a British Heart Foundation Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine and was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2025. He holds qualifications including MD, PhD, FRCP, and FMedSci, and maintains an active programme of clinical trials and imaging initiatives at Oxford.
