Associate Professor Charles Pagel serves as Senior Lecturer in Agricultural Molecular Sciences at the Melbourne Veterinary School, University of Melbourne, where he leads the Laboratory of Bone and Muscle Cell Biology. A biochemist and molecular biologist, Pagel brings over 30 years of experience investigating skeletal muscle and bone pathology, injury, and regeneration. His expertise encompasses cell culture techniques, transcriptomics, RT-PCR analysis, and the application of disease models for the musculoskeletal system to uncover pathological processes and innovate therapeutic interventions. Pagel's primary research interest lies in the control of muscle and bone growth and healing, with a focus on the regulation of bone, cartilage, and muscle cell behavior during development, regeneration, and pathological conditions. He earned his PhD in Tissue Engineering (Pathology) at Imperial College London, followed by postdoctoral work at the University of Melbourne. Since December 2015, he has held academic appointments within the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Melbourne, advancing to his current associate professor role.
The laboratory under Pagel's leadership explores critical areas such as the role of protease-activated receptors in mediating muscle-bone interactions and their relevance to periodontal disease; the contributions of hypertrophic chondrocytes to bone growth; assessments of bone health in dairy cows; and investigations into the structural determinants of bone injuries in racehorses. Through these efforts, Pagel's work contributes to understanding musculoskeletal pathophysiology and developing targeted therapies for conditions affecting bone and muscle tissues in both agricultural and veterinary contexts. His research employs sophisticated molecular and cellular approaches to bridge basic science with practical applications in animal health and production.
