About Chiam

Dr Gurion Ang is a Senior Lecturer specialising in ecology and zoology and Director of Engagement and Advancement in the School of the Environment within the Faculty of Science at the University of Queensland. He also holds the role of Bachelor of Science Program Director, where he provides leadership for program positioning, review, renewal, quality assurance, and student experience. Ang coordinates undergraduate courses such as BIOL1050 Organisms: Interactions & Functions, BIOL2010 Ecology, BIOL2910 Advanced Ecology, BIOL2205 Insect Science, BIOL3238 Insect Structure, Function & Physiology, and SCIE3010 Science Engagement in the Community. He chairs a team managing relationships with future students, international partners, alumni, donors, and industry partners, while delivering professional development workshops to Queensland senior science teachers, technicians, and teacher librarians to promote best practices in biology education.

Ang earned his Doctor of Philosophy in 2018 from the University of Queensland School of Biological Sciences with a thesis entitled 'Insect-plant interactions: oviposition and larval-feeding behaviour of diamondback moth.' His research interests include ecology, genetics, evolution, and behavioural ecology, with emphasis on insect-plant interactions. Key publications include the open textbook 'Insect Science' co-authored with Kathryn Ebert (The University of Queensland, 2025); 'Lethal and sublethal effects of calcium carbonate formulation against fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda' (Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, 2025); 'Bringing Ecology Back: How Can the Chemistry of Indirect Plant Defenses Against Herbivory Be Manipulated to Improve Pest Management?' (Frontiers in Plant Science, 2018); 'Temporal changes in olfactory and oviposition responses of the diamondback moth to herbivore-induced host plants' (Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, 2016); and 'Contrary effects of leaf position and identity on oviposition and larval feeding patterns of the diamondback moth' (Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, 2014). In 2024, he received the Faculty of Science Award for Teaching Excellence. Ang leads the award-winning 'G-Unit' team, conducting high school engagements, bespoke learning immersions, study tours, recruitment, and science communication to bridge secondary-tertiary transitions.
