About Chris

Chris Turnbull is a Career Development Fellow in the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford. He holds the degrees BMBCh, DPhil, BA and MRCP. He serves as Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and as Non-stipendiary Lecturer at St Hugh’s College, University of Oxford. His specialist interest is in sleep related breathing disorders. Turnbull leads and contributes to clinical trials investigating the cardiovascular and metabolic consequences of obstructive sleep apnoea and new therapeutic options for patients with the condition, in collaboration with the UK Sleep Network. His research spans laboratory-based biomarker discovery, translational physiological studies and practice-changing clinical studies. Notable trials include the POSA trial, which demonstrated that neck-worn vibrotactile positional therapy reduces the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea, and the MERGE trial, which showed that CPAP improves quality of life and daytime sleepiness in patients with symptomatic mild obstructive sleep apnoea. Additional studies have examined the effects of CPAP on cardiovascular outcomes, inflammatory pathways induced by intermittent hypoxia, and changes in outpatient CPAP set-up during the COVID-19 pandemic. Turnbull is Associate Editor for Education at Thorax (BMJ) and Medical Advisor to the Sleep Apnoea Trust Association. He has contributed to multiple publications on respiratory and sleep medicine topics.
