Professor Christhina Candido serves as Professor of Environmental & Sustainable Design in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne, where she directs the Sustainable and Healthy Environments (SHE) Lab. Trained as an architect, she earned a PhD in Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil and a PhD in Environmental Science from Macquarie University in Australia. Before joining the University of Melbourne in 2020 as Associate Professor, she was a Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney. Her career emphasizes advancing knowledge in occupant-centric building performance through applied research.
Candido's research focuses on end-user experiences and perceptions in built environments, sustainable and healthy indoor spaces, high-performance workplaces, thermal comfort and delight, natural ventilation, indoor air quality, and post-occupancy evaluation. The SHE Lab, under her leadership, has developed tools endorsed for use in WELL v2, Green Star, and NABERS IE frameworks. Notable publications include 'From Thermal Boredom to Thermal Pleasure: A Brief Literature Review,' 'Unravelling Property Stakeholders’ Motivations and Challenges When Adopting WELL within the APAC Region,' 'Engaging the Workplace to Address Societal Issues and Expected Human Experiences,' 'Wind, Making the Invisible Visible: Design for and with Natural Ventilation,' and 'The Potential of High-Performance Workplaces for Boosting Worker Wellbeing' (2023). With 136 research works and over 4,600 citations, her scholarship shapes global standards for healthy buildings. Awards include the 2024 IWBI Educator of the Year, 2023 IWBI Changemaker, 2024 University of Melbourne Sustainability Award, and 2024 Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Research Award. She contributes to the IWBI Global Research Advisory and Global Commission on Healthy Indoor Air, alongside public lectures and editorial roles.
