Dr Christian Gray is a Senior Lecturer in the Academy for Medical Education at the University of Queensland Medical School. He joined the University of Queensland in 2019, serving as a course coordinator and module lead, including coordination of MEDI7282 Preparation for US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1, a course supporting Doctor of Medicine students from the Ochsner Health System in New Orleans. He contributes to teaching in Clinical Science domains. Previously, Dr Gray held the position of Lecturer in Infection and Immunity and served as Immunology discipline lead at Peninsula Medical School, University of Plymouth, Devon, United Kingdom. His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honours) from Flinders University, a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Newcastle awarded in 2002, a Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice from Plymouth University, and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
Dr Gray's early career featured postdoctoral research in diverse immunological fields, including therapies for rheumatoid arthritis, pneumococcal vaccines, mastitis resistance in dairy cattle, and vaccines against Rhipicephalus microplus. He was the first researcher to identify the link between regulatory T cell activation and immune system suppression in melanoma patients. Applying his biomedical expertise to pedagogy, Dr Gray now focuses his research on medical education, specifically enhancing student performance via interventions, innovation, and support; preparation for medical licensing exams such as USMLE Step 1 and the Medical Licensing Assessment; remediation for struggling students; and accommodations for students with disabilities or specific learning difficulties. His publications encompass 56 works listed in the UQ Experts profile, including 32 journal articles, 22 conference publications, and 2 book chapters. Notable contributions include 'Standard setting anchor statements: a double cross-over trial of two different methods' (Medical Teacher, 2021, co-authored with multiple colleagues), 'Timing is key to providing modified assessments for students with specific learning difficulties' (2019, with Steven A. Burr), 'A holistic remediation intervention for struggling undergraduate medical students affords sustained Progress Test performance recovery' (2018, with Nick Toms), 'Features of Blastocystis spp. in xenic culture revealed by deconvolutional microscopy' (Parasitology Research, 2015), 'Anthelminthic activity of the cyclotides (kalata B1 and B2) against schistosome parasites' (Biopolymers, 2013), and forthcoming chapters such as 'Guide to Taking the Medical Licensing Assessment Applied Knowledge Test' (2025, with Iain Robinson and Alina Beltechi). These works have amassed over 2,200 citations, demonstrating his influence across biomedical sciences and medical education.
