Christoph Antons is Honorary Professor in the Macquarie Law School at Macquarie University. He earned a PhD in Law from the University of Amsterdam on Intellectual Property Law in Indonesia in 1995, an Intermediate Examination for MA in Southeast Asian Studies and Art History from the University of Passau in 1988, Assessor iur. in Law from the Ministry of Justice in Bavaria, Germany in 1986, and Referendar iur. in Law from the Ministry of Justice in Rhineland Palatinate, Germany in 1983. Throughout his career, Antons has held academic positions at the University of Newcastle, Deakin University, the University of Wollongong, Charles Darwin University, La Trobe University, and Griffith University. He has undertaken visiting research and teaching appointments at institutions including Stanford Law School, the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich, the University of Melbourne, Singapore Management University, the University of Technology MARA in Malaysia, and the Käte Hamburger Centre for Advanced Study 'Law as Culture' at the University of Bonn. Currently, he serves as Senior Fellow at the Centre for Development Research at the University of Bonn, Associate Researcher at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability, and Senior Associate at the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society at the University of Melbourne.
Antons' research examines the interplay between law and diverse epistemologies of knowledge, with a focus on Asia in areas such as intellectual property law, environmental law, human rights, and law and society. He leads Australian Research Council Discovery projects on food security and the governance of local agricultural knowledge in India and Indonesia, and on the development of Indonesia's intellectual property system. His accolades include the QEII Fellowship from the Australian Research Council, directorships of the ARC Key Centre for Asia-Pacific Social Transformation Studies and the Centre for Southeast Asian Law, Chief Investigatorship in the 'IP in Asia' project at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation, Associate Membership in the International Academy of Comparative Law, and the Schloessmann Award from the Max Planck Foundation in 1998. Key publications encompass the edited book Intellectual Property Law in South East Asia (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2023), chapters such as 'Plant variety protection and farmers' rights in India and Indonesia' (2023) and 'Intangible cultural heritage, intellectual property, and the politics of development in Southeast Asia' (2023), and Intellectual Property, Cultural Property and Intangible Cultural Heritage (Routledge, 2017). Antons contributes as an editor and peer reviewer for publishers including Edward Elgar and journals like the Potchefstroom Electronic Law Journal, and has participated in United Nations Environment Programme meetings.
