Christopher Howell, DSc, MSc, MPAS, PA-C, MBA, DFAAPA, is an Associate Professor at Miami University in the College of Arts and Science. He holds the position of associate professor of Biomedical Science and was the Program Director for the Physician Associate Studies program from March 2020 until December 2025. Howell has held several positions in clinical practice, academia, and the United States Air Force. As a certified physician assistant and veteran, he brings substantial experience to his teaching and leadership roles. He serves on the Nutrition and Dietetic Advisory Board in the Department of Kinesiology, Nutrition, and Health and participated in the Department Chairs Learning Community for Enhancing Leadership through the Center for Teaching Excellence.
Under Howell's direction as associate teaching professor and program director, Miami University's Physician Associate Studies program advanced significantly. The 27-month Master of Medical Science program received provisional accreditation in October 2022 and matriculated its first class in May 2023. Housed in the new Clinical Health Sciences and Wellness facility, the program emphasizes training generalist physician associates for holistic healthcare, particularly serving rural communities and families. In December 2024, the program earned recognition from the Ohio Rural Health Association for its contributions to rural health. Howell's efforts helped establish the program within the Biomedical Science and Clinical Biotechnologies framework, preparing students through modular organ systems-based learning and clinical rotations. His involvement underscores a commitment to interdisciplinary health education at Miami University.
