Christopher Young is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, where he holds an affiliation in the Central Clinical School and Discipline of Surgery. He has served as Head of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, with over 22 years of practice as a colorectal and general surgeon. Young's academic background includes a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Sydney in 1987, a Master of Surgery (MS) in Colorectal Surgery from the University of Sydney, PhD in colorectal surgery from Charles Darwin University in 2024, Doctor of Education (EdD), Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Kansas Wesleyan University in 2022, and fellowships including FRACS (Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, 1991-1994), FACS, and FASCRS. His training encompasses general surgery residency and a Colorectal Fellowship (1995-1996), with international experience at the Cleveland Clinic in the United States.
Young's research specializations focus on the management of colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor dysfunction, surgical education, and decision making. He has led initiatives such as the Peritonectomy Program at the Institute of Academic Surgery (IAS) RPAH, served as Executive Director of Surgical Education, Colorectal Research Lead, and SOuRCe Director. Notable publications include 'Surgical Competencies Required in Newly Commencing Colorectal Registrars' (2021), 'Bowel Preparation and Oral Antibiotic Agents for Selective Bowel Decontamination in Elective Colorectal Surgery' (2021), 'Predictors for Complete Pathological Response for Stage II and III Rectal Cancers After Neoadjuvant Chemoradiation Therapy' (2020), 'Management of Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury: Colorectal Surgeons' Practice' (2020), and 'The Use of Adjuvant Chemotherapy is Not Associated with Recurrence After Resection of Colorectal Peritoneal Metastases' (2023). He has received funding for competency-based surgical training projects in colorectal and general surgery. Young is a member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand and contributes to surgical robotics, peritonectomy, and pelvic exenteration programs.
