About Chung-Yu

Associate Professor Chung-Yu Hung serves in the Department of Accounting within the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne. She obtained her Ph.D. in Accounting and Research Master of Business in Accounting from Tilburg University in the Netherlands. Her professional trajectory features prominent visiting roles, including a Mercator Fellowship at Frankfurt School of Finance and Management in 2020, short-term visits to the same school in 2019, Nanyang Technological University in 2017 and 2018, and a visiting scholar position at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, in 2014. Currently, as Senior Lecturer in Accounting, she contributes to the academic community through PhD supervision, having co-supervised Ruidi Shang, who secured a placement at Tilburg University, and Feilian Wang. Additionally, she acts as an ad hoc reviewer for prestigious journals such as Journal of Accounting Research, Contemporary Accounting Research, Management Science, The Accounting Review, Accounting, Organizations and Society, Management Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Journal of Management Accounting Research, and European Accounting Review.

Chung-Yu Hung's research focuses on management accounting, incentives, and performance measurement, alongside internal information asymmetry and the role of agents' heterogeneity in control systems, covering managerial discretion, performance evaluation, compensation, and organizational designs. Her influential publications appear in leading outlets. Notable works include "Does Referral-Based Hiring Exacerbate Agency Problems?" with Anne Lillis and Anne Wu in The Accounting Review (2023); "Managers' Career Preferences and Corporate Culture" with Margaret Abernethy and Like Jiang in Contemporary Accounting Research (2024); "Expertise and Discretionary Bonus Decisions" with Abernethy and Laurence van Lent in Management Science (2020); "Group Identity, Performance Transparency, and Employee Performance" with Ruidi Shang and Abernethy in The Accounting Review (2020); and "Benefits of Independent Agents' Entrepreneurship: Evidence From the Loan Market" in Journal of Management Accounting Research (2022).
