About Claire
Dr Claire Doll serves as a Research Fellow in the Department of Economics within the UWA Business School and as Deputy Director-Engagement for the Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy at the University of Western Australia. Her academic journey includes a Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural and Resource Economics from UWA, awarded on 29 April 2024, with a thesis titled "The economics of public open spaces under water scarcity." She also earned a Master of Science in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of Alberta in 2017 and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Conservation Sciences, specializing in Environmental Economics and Policy, from the same university in 2014. Before joining UWA, Doll worked as an analyst in the public service for the Government of Alberta and as a Research Assistant on the Future Energy Systems program at the University of Alberta. Additionally, she has served as a Guest Lecturer for Environmental Engineering Design Solutions (ENVE5552) from 2023 to 2024 and as a visiting researcher at Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin from June to October 2022.
Doll's research centers on applied, policy-oriented environmental economics, utilizing non-market valuation techniques—including revealed- and stated-preference methods—and benefit-cost analysis to address issues such as urban greening, biodiversity conservation, water scarcity, biofuels, environmental offsets, and bushfire management. She engages in interdisciplinary collaborations across Australia, South Asia, Canada, and Germany. Her notable publications encompass "Economic evaluation of alternative urban park designs that conserve irrigation water" (Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, 2024, with D.J. Pannell and M.P. Burton), "The Role of Social Norms and Economic Incentives in Encouraging the Adoption of Native Gardens" (Land Economics, 2025, with C. Rollins et al.), "Public preferences for street tree characteristics: A best-worst scaling experiment" (Urban Forestry & Urban Greening, 2025), and "What We Know Shapes What We Grow: Environmental Information Treatment Effects on Urban Tree Choices" (Environmental & Resource Economics, 2026). Among her accolades are the Quality of Research Communication Award for Early- and Mid-Career Researchers (2024), Research & Development Excellence Award (2023), Three Minute Thesis Runner-Up (2023), University of Western Australia Research Collaboration Award (2022), and a Forrest Research Foundation Scholarship supporting her PhD, along with Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada fellowships for her graduate studies. Doll holds the position of Director at the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society and anticipates starting an ARC Early Career Industry Fellowship in 2026 to advance economic frameworks for waterwise urban greening.
