Great Professor!
Professor Clare Scott AM is Professor of Gynaecological Cancer and Chair in Gynaecological Cancer at the University of Melbourne in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Health, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. She serves as Laboratory Head of the Ovarian and Rare Gynaecological Cancers Laboratory at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) and practices as a medical oncologist at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Royal Women’s Hospital, and Royal Melbourne Hospital. Holding MBBS and PhD degrees from the University of Melbourne, she is a clinician-scientist with 25 years of experience in clinical cancer genetics, including work in Familial Cancer Clinics. She established the national WEHI Stafford Fox Rare Cancer Program and the Australian Rare Cancer Portal to enhance access to expert care and research for rare cancer patients across Australia.
Her research focuses on susceptibility and resistance to precision therapies in rare gynaecological cancers, particularly ovarian cancers, developing pre-clinical models for drug resistance and contributing to PARP inhibitor treatments. She has led clinical trials and created internationally renowned resources for studying rare cancers. Honors include Member of the Order of Australia (AM), election to the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS) in 2018, and the Australian Academy of Science (AAS) in 2025. Key publications encompass 'Interferon-ε is a tumour suppressor and restricts ovarian cancer' (Nature, 2023), 'BRCA1 secondary splice-site mutations drive exon-skipping and PARP inhibitor resistance' (Molecular Cancer, 2024), 'CHK1 inhibitor SRA737 is active in PARP inhibitor resistant and CCNE1 amplified ovarian cancer' (iScience, 2024), and contributions to 'Olaparib Maintenance Therapy in Platinum-Sensitive Relapsed Ovarian Cancer' (NEJM, 2012). Her contributions advance targeted therapies and infrastructure for rare cancers, impacting clinical practice and research globally.
