Rate My Professor Clas Weber

Clas Weber is a DECRA Fellow and Senior Lecturer in Philosophy within the School of Humanities at the University of Western Australia. He completed his PhD in Philosophy at the Australian National University in 2014, with a thesis entitled 'Propositions and Centered Content,' supervised by David Chalmers, Frank Jackson, Jonathan Schaffer, and Daniel Nolan. Prior to his current appointment, Weber served as a Humboldt Fellow at Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen starting in November 2020 and as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oslo from 2016 to 2017. He is affiliated with the UWA Data Institute and leads an Australian Research Council-supported project on mind-uploading, which develops a theoretical framework integrating philosophy of mind, metaphysics, and artificial intelligence to explore questions of survival, rationality, value, and ethical implications of transitioning to artificial hardware.

Weber's research addresses foundational issues in the philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and metaphysics, including the nature of self-locating content in thought and language, the metaphysics of personal identity from the first-person perspective, and mind-uploading. His interdisciplinary contributions examine the economic effects of linguistic structures, such as the impact of gendered language on gendered domestic violence and the role of future tense in religiosity and pro-environmental behavior. Weber has received the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers (2020) and the School of Humanities Mid-Career Research Award (2024). At UWA, he convenes the Philosophical Society and serves as postgraduate coordinator.
