Claudia Grobbel, DNP, RN, CNL, serves as an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at Oakland University. She holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Nursing Administration from Oakland University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Wayne State University, and an RN diploma from Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing. Beginning her nursing career in 1978, Dr. Grobbel amassed over 30 years of clinical experience, including leadership positions in inpatient and outpatient settings, with expertise in cardiac nursing, management, nursing leadership, health policy, and administration. Prior to academia, she spent more than 20 years in clinical practice before joining Oakland University, where she teaches leadership and policy courses across all nursing programs.
Dr. Grobbel's research centers on caring science as it relates to quality outcomes, quality and safety education in nursing (QSEN), leadership simulation, and the integration of technology, such as robots, in fostering caring relationships. She is the designer of the Caring Studio, an innovative series of experiential workshops that highlight the importance of caring practices beyond technical competencies in patient care. Her scholarly contributions include developing the Nursing Quality Safety Self Inventory (NQSSI) tool to measure perceptions of quality and safety. Key publications feature "Caring Science Curriculum and the Robot Revolution: A Call to Action" (Mallette et al., 2018, International Journal of Human Caring), "What Healthcare Workers Told Us about Working through the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Analysis of Digital Audio Stories" (2023), "Social Justice as an Expression of Caring through Holistic Admissions in a Nursing Program: A Proposed Conceptual Model" (2020), and recent articles on AI in nursing education, including "The Effect of AI Education on Nursing Student AI Literacy and Anxiety" (2025) and "Innovative Leaders: An AI-Assisted Project for Graduate Nursing Students" (2026). Dr. Grobbel has presented her research on the Caring Studio at national and international conferences. She is affiliated with Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Theta Psi Chapter), the Anne Boykin Institute for Caring Science, the International Association for Human Caring, and the Clinical Nurse Leader Association.
