Dr. Colin Black serves as a Teaching Associate and Adjunct Lecturer in the Faculty of Business, Law and Arts at Southern Cross University. He earned his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Sydney, where his research investigated radio art as a subset of media art, arts-based research, and ethnography, supported by the University of Sydney Postgraduate Awards Scholarship. Black holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New England, a Diploma in Music Direction and Composition for Television from the Australian Film Television and Radio School, and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. He is currently completing a Master of Arts Therapy at the University of Ljubljana with an average grade of 9.17/10.
Colin Black is an internationally acclaimed composer, sound artist, and radio artist, having won the 2023 Prix Phonurgia Nova Award (France), the 2015 New York Festivals award for sound art, and the 2003 Prix Italia Award, with finalist selections at the Prix Marulić (Croatia), Grand Prix Nova (Romania), and APRA Professional Development Awards (Australia). He has received commissions for innovative works in installation, performance, and broadcast across Australia, the USA, and Europe. His research interests include sound art, radio art, media art, investigative art, media ecology, ethnography, social innovation, art therapy, arts-based research, music composition, sonic art, interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation, and arts practitioner-focused ethnography. Black holds visiting research fellowships at the University of Nova Gorica (Slovenia) and previously at Goldsmiths, University of London, and has served as a casual academic lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney and Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (Germany). He has delivered guest lectures and workshops at Technische Universität Berlin, Macquarie University, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Limerick, University of Zagreb, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Goldsmiths University of London, London Metropolitan University, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Northwestern University, and the University of Ljubljana. Additionally, he conducted a masterclass for postgraduate students at Bournemouth University, served on the subject development committee for the Australian Film Television and Radio School, supervised an honours music student at the University of Western Sydney, and assessed postgraduate creative arts submissions for the University of Wollongong. His community work includes art therapy workshops for university students and institutionalized people with special needs. Recent research outputs encompass the live performance Colin Black: Avian Love (2024) and the radio broadcast Avian Love (2023).
