Corey Hickerson, Ph.D., serves as a Professor in the School of Communication Studies at James Madison University, where he is part of the Communications faculty. He earned his B.A. from The University of Memphis, M.A. from The University of Alabama, and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Joining the faculty in 2005, Hickerson is the graduate director for the M.A. in Communication and Advocacy program. In addition, he is the Director of Global Learning and Curriculum Internationalization within the Center for Global Engagement. His teaching portfolio includes undergraduate and graduate courses focused on strategic communication and public relations.
Hickerson's scholarly interests lie in communication pedagogy, privacy, stakeholder engagement, and technology, aligning with areas such as public relations, social media, pedagogy, graduate education, and technology. A notable contribution to the field is his co-authorship with Brigitta Brunner of the book Cases in Public Relations: Translating Ethics into Action, published in 2018 by Oxford University Press. This work earned the National Communication Association's Public Relations Division PRIDE Book of the Year Award, underscoring his impact on public relations education and ethics. Hickerson's excellence in teaching and advising has been honored with the JMU Carl Harter Distinguished Professor award, the Center for Instructional Technology’s Learning with Technology award, and the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Advising. He has also contributed to university initiatives, including the Provost's Fulbright Advisory Committee and the Quality Enhancement Plan working group.
