Alexis Coulourides Kogan, PhD, is an assistant professor of Family Medicine and Geriatrics in the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. She earned a BS in Exercise and Sports Sciences from Tulane University in 2006, an MS in Gerontology in 2010, and a PhD in Gerontology in 2014, both from the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. Prior to her current role, she held a postdoctoral research associate position in the Department of Family Medicine and Geriatrics at the Keck School of Medicine from 2014 to 2018. She is also affiliated with the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, the USC Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics as a scholar, and serves as Director of Research for USC Street Medicine.
Dr. Coulourides Kogan is a mixed-methods health systems researcher whose work focuses on the translation and measurement of person-centered models of care for older adults and those with serious illnesses, including homeless populations. She led the American Geriatrics Society Expert Panel on Person-Centered Care, authoring the seminal paper 'Person-Centered Care: A Definition and Essential Elements' published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society in 2016. Other key publications include 'Person-Centered Care for Older Adults with Chronic Conditions and Functional Impairment: A Systematic Literature Review' (JAGS, 2016), 'Moving Toward Implementation of Person-Centered Care for Older Adults in Community-Based Medical and Social Service Settings' (JAGS, 2016), 'Developing the Geriatric Injury Documentation Tool (Geri-IDT) to Improve Documentation of Physical Findings in Older Adult Patients' (Journal of General Internal Medicine, 2019), and recent work such as 'Access to Basic Needs and Healthcare by People Experiencing Unsheltered Homelessness' (2025). Her contributions have advanced the integration of person-centered practices into clinical care delivery. Among her honors are the K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Career Development Award from the National Institute on Aging (2016), the engAging Award from USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology (2014), the James and Betty Birren Best Teaching Assistant Prize (2014), and the Research Scholar designation from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (2017).
