About Courtney

Courtney Hopf is Senior Lecturer and Programme Manager for Liberal Studies and Creative Arts at New York University in London. She coordinates the Liberal Studies and Tisch programmes, maintains links between New York schools and London faculty, students, and partner organisations including RADA and the National Film and Television School. Hopf teaches in the Liberal Studies Core, Global Liberal Studies, Writing sequence, and English department programmes. She holds a PhD in English from the University of California, Davis, an MA in English from the University of East Anglia, and a BA in English from Mount Holyoke College. She first came to England as a study abroad student at the University of Kent in Canterbury before returning for her MA and settling in London.

Hopf is a narratologist specialising in 20th and 21st Century British literature. She is the co-editor of David Mitchell: Contemporary Critical Perspectives published by Bloomsbury. Her main academic interests include 20th Century and contemporary British literature, narrative theory, educational philosophy, and radical teaching practices. She is an active practitioner of the Reacting to the Past experiential pedagogy, which uses academic role-playing games set in key historical moments to help students master rhetoric and communication. In her current project, she investigates how immersive activities such as Reacting to the Past can challenge formulaic learning objectives in higher education and promote greater student investment, critical thinking, and retention through play and chance encounters. In 2022, Hopf received the Gabriela Horvath LS Teaching Excellence Award for Global Site Faculty.
