Dr. C.R. Mariappan serves as an Associate Professor in the Physics Department at Pondicherry University. He obtained his B.Sc. in Physics (Major) from Madurai Kamaraj University in 1996, M.Sc. in Physics from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore in 1998, and Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics from Pondicherry University in 2004. Following his doctorate, he pursued postdoctoral research as a fellow at Universite du Maine, Le Mans, France in 2005 working on nanomaterials. He was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at Philipps University, Marburg, Germany from 2006 to 2008 researching bioceramics, a European Research Fellow at Imperial College, London in 2007, and a DFG-funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Philipps University, Marburg from 2009 to 2010 focusing on lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, he served as a Visiting Scientist at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam from 2010 to 2012 on chemical gas sensors. His academic career includes positions as Assistant Professor at Tezpur University in 2013, National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra from 2013 to 2021, and NIT Puducherry from 2021 to 2023 before joining Pondicherry University as Associate Professor in 2023.
Specializing in experimental condensed matter physics, Dr. Mariappan's research focuses on developing ion-conducting solids, metal oxide semiconductors for advanced battery systems, supercapacitors, gas sensors, and bio-ceramics for bone replacements. He has successfully supervised six Ph.D. students and numerous M.Tech. theses. His accolades include being ranked in the World Top 2% Scientists list by Stanford University in the Applied Physics-Materials category (2021), DST Young Scientist Scheme award (2014), Best Research Article award (2021), and fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and European Research. Key publications encompass "Self-assembly of novel cobalt iron phosphate nanoparticles for the solid-state supercapattery and high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction" (International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, 2023), "Designing the novel Co2FeV2O8 micro sticks with prompted multiple electrochemical performances..."
