Daan van Knippenberg is Houston Endowment Chair of Management and Professor of Psychology (by courtesy) at Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business, where he also serves as Ph.D. Area Advisor in Organizational Behavior. He earned his PhD in Psychology from Leiden University and his MA in Psychology from the University of Groningen. His academic career spans multiple prestigious institutions: prior to Rice in 2022, he was Joseph F. Rocereto Chair in Leadership at Drexel University (2017-2022); Professor of Organizational Behavior at Erasmus University Rotterdam (2002-2017), with ongoing visiting professorship there; fractional appointments as Professor at Aston University (2012-2020) and Renmin University of China (2014-2016); Associate Professor of Organizational Psychology at the University of Amsterdam (1998-2002); and Assistant Professor of Organizational Psychology at Leiden University (1994-1998). He has also held visiting positions at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (2010) and University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’ (2008).
Van Knippenberg’s research focuses on leadership, team performance, creativity and innovation, diversity and inclusion, and conflict in organizational contexts. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Management, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, the American Psychological Association, and the International Association for Applied Psychology, and a member of the Society for Organizational Behavior. His editorial contributions are extensive: Editor-in-Chief of Academy of Management Annals (2016-2019) and founding Editor-in-Chief of Organizational Psychology Review (2009-2016); Associate Editor of Academy of Management Journal (2013-2016), Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes (2007-2010), and Journal of Organizational Behavior (2007-2013); and current or past editorial board member for journals including Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Applied Psychology, Leadership Quarterly, and Journal of Management. Notable publications include the books Leadership and Power: Identity Processes in Groups and Organizations (2003, with M.A. Hogg) and Social Identity at Work: Developing Theory for Organizational Practice (2003, with S.A. Haslam, M.J. Platow, and N. Ellemers); recent articles such as “Why theory on ‘how theory fits together’ benefits management scholarship” (Academy of Management Review, 2021, with M.A. Cronin and J. Stouten), “The team causes and consequences of team membership change: A temporal perspective” (Academy of Management Annals, 2021, with J. Li), and over 200 other scholarly articles in top outlets.
