Silverstone's research specializations center on policing organised crime, gun crime, and social problems in the UK. Notable publications include the book 'Social Problems in the UK: An Introduction' (2014), which contextualizes social issues within sociology, social policy, criminology, and applied social science. He co-authored 'Gun Crime: The Market in and Use of Illegal Firearms' (2006), exploring illegal firearms markets; 'That's life innit: A British perspective on guns, crime and social order' (2009); 'Policing of Vietnamese Organized Crime within the UK' (2011, Policing journal); and 'It's Chinatown: The policing of Chinese organised crime in the UK' (2016, Police Journal).
