Professor Daniel Chan is the Professor of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine and Clinical Nutrition at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), serving as Head of Department for Clinical Science and Services. He directs the Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) Residency Programme, Intramural Rotations, the Nutritional Support Service, and the Veterinary Trauma Centre at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals. Chan also acts as Year 4 Leader for the BVetMed Programme and was Medical Director of the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals from 2016. His academic journey began with a BSc in Biology from the State University of New York at Geneseo in 1994, followed by a DVM from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. He completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at The Animal Medical Center in New York City and residencies in clinical nutrition and emergency/critical care at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, where he later served as Research Assistant Professor before joining RVC in 2005. He advanced to Section Head of ECC Services in 2008 and Head of Department in 2018. Holding diplomate certifications from ACVECC, ECVECC, and ACVN, as well as MRCVS status, Chan's expertise is well-recognized.
Chan's research centers on coagulation disorders, thromboelastography, platelet function assessment, and nutritional support for critically ill patients, with ongoing projects assessing coagulation and fibrinolytic disorders. His clinical interests encompass managing critically ill patients needing mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy including dialysis and plasmapheresis, and interventional nutrition, particularly in cases of sepsis, acute pancreatitis, and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. In teaching, he emphasizes integrating medical knowledge with practical challenges like communication and resource management, lecturing on professionalism, ECC, and clinical nutrition. Key publications include the book Nutritional Management of Hospitalized Small Animals (2015) and articles such as "Description of the use of plasma exchange in dogs with Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy" (Front Vet Sci, 2018), "Multicenter in vitro TEG-ROTEM standardization" (J Vet Emerg Crit Care, 2018), and "Nutritional management of acute pancreatitis in dogs and cats" (J Vet Emerg Crit Care, 2014). Since 2010, he has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, contributing significantly to the field.
