Dr Daniel Lamport is an Associate Professor in Nutritional Neuroscience in the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences at the University of Reading. He obtained his PhD in Psychology from the University of Leeds in 2010, with a thesis examining the effects of carbohydrate quality on cognitive performance in type 2 diabetes. Lamport also holds an MSc in Psychological Approaches to Health and a BSc in Psychology. After completing his doctorate, he took up postdoctoral and lectureship positions at the University of Reading, advancing to his current role as Associate Professor. With a career spanning over 18 years in psychology, health, and nutrition, he leads the University of Reading's Nutrition, Cognition and Health Research Group within the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences. He supervises several PhD students and postdoctoral researchers and is a member of the Centre for Integrative Neuroscience and Neurodynamics (CINN). Lamport convenes the module PY2BCH on Behaviour Change and co-convenes PY3NCMH on Nutrition, Cognition and Mental Health.
Lamport's research focuses on the effects of diet, nutritional interventions, and metabolic disorders on neuropsychological function, mood, and mental health, particularly through the gut-brain axis. Key areas include polyphenols (flavonoids), glycaemic responses, psychobiotics, lifespan dietary influences on cognition, dietary behaviour change, nutritional effects on sleep, and exercise impacts on cognitive function. He has established international collaborations and secured funding from Public Health England, UKRI, EIT Europe, ILSI Europe, Innovate UK, and industry partners such as Clasado Ltd. His influential publications include 'Impact of postprandial glycaemia on health and prevention of disease' (Obesity Reviews, 2012), 'Chronic consumption of flavanone-rich orange juice is associated with cognitive benefits: an 8-wk, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in healthy older adults' (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2015), 'Impairments in glucose tolerance can have a negative impact on cognitive function: a systematic research review' (Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews, 2009), 'Fruits, vegetables, 100% juices, and cognitive function' (Nutrition Reviews, 2014), 'Effects of Dietary Flavonoids on Mood and Mental Health: A Systematic Review' (2025), and 'The effect of probiotics on cognitive function across the lifespan' (2021). Lamport contributes to the field through committee roles, including membership on the British Psychological Society Psychobiology Committee, co-chairing the Nutrition Society Special Interest Group on Nutritional Psychiatry, and membership in the Nutrition Society Polyphenols and Health group. His work advances the translation of nutritional neuroscience to clinical and public health applications.
