Professor Daniel Murphy serves as a Professor in the Centre for Sustainable Farming Systems and Director of the Bioplastics Innovation Hub at Murdoch University within the Food Futures Institute. As a distinguished microbiologist and biochemist, he is an expert in soil-plant-microbial interactions, leading research efforts to advance sustainable farming systems, enhance soil health, and develop innovative solutions for environmental challenges. In May 2021, Professor Murphy joined Murdoch University with a prominent soil science team, including Professors David Jones and Frances Hoyle, to tackle pressing issues in food security and climate change adaptation. Prior to this, he was Professor of Soil Science and Head of the School of Agriculture and Environment at the University of Western Australia. His career has been marked by significant contributions to soil microbiology, nutrient cycling, and agricultural resilience.
Professor Murphy's research portfolio includes pioneering work on 100% compostable bioplastics as sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics, in collaboration with CSIRO and industry partners through the Bioplastics Innovation Hub. Key projects explore how microplastics impact soil health, the role of soil fauna in nutrient cycling, and technologies like smart sprays to optimize crop productivity and water retention in rainfall-limited environments. He has overseen numerous PhD projects, such as those investigating microbial degradation of plastics and soil additives' toxicity to nematodes. Notable publications include 'Toxicity of additives present in conventional plastics to the root lesion nematode Pratylenchus quasiterreus' (Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2024), 'Nature's Plastic Predators' (2024), and earlier highly cited works like 'In Situ Mapping of Nutrient Uptake in the Rhizosphere Using Nanoscale Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry' (2009). In 2022, he served as interim Pro Vice Chancellor of the Food Futures Institute. Professor Murphy has delivered insights through public engagements, including international workshops on biotechnology and the circular economy, and contributes to global efforts addressing plastic waste and sustainable agriculture. His scholarship, reflected in over 20,000 citations, underscores his influence in advancing eco-friendly biomanufacturing and soil science.
