Daniel Steinfort

Professor Daniel Steinfort is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Melbourne and a Respiratory Physician at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, specializing in interventional pulmonology. He holds the qualifications MBBS, BMedSci, PhD, and FRACP. His career encompasses clinical practice and research leadership in respiratory medicine, with appointments including Principal Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne.

Steinfort's research focuses on advanced diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy techniques, particularly endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA), radial probe endobronchial ultrasound, and bronchoscopic ablation for lung cancer. He has pioneered novel applications of interventional technologies, led international collaborations on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) diagnosis and staging, and served as Principal Investigator for multiple first-in-human studies of bronchoscopic radiofrequency ablation catheters targeting peripheral lung tumors. He directs a world-leading interventional bronchoscopy service at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. Steinfort has authored over 140 peer-reviewed publications on lung cancer and respiratory diseases. In 2022, he received the European Respiratory Society Mid-Career Gold Medal in Clinical Techniques, Imaging and Endoscopy, the highest international accolade in interventional pulmonology.
