Dr. Danita Potter is the Dean and Professor of the Hampton University School of Nursing. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing from Hampton University in 2011. Her dissertation, titled 'Selected African American First-Time Teenage Mothers’ Perceptions of Nursing Caring Behaviors During the Postpartum Period,' was chaired by Dr. Arlene J. Montgomery, with committee members Dr. Esther Condon and Dr. Zina McGee. As Dean, Dr. Potter leads the School of Nursing, Virginia's oldest nursing program, shaping the future of healthcare through education, innovation, and advocacy. Under her leadership, the school has expanded clinical partnerships, enhanced research opportunities for students and faculty, and prepared graduates to excel in an evolving healthcare landscape. She spearheaded the recent accreditation process, ensuring the program meets all requirements of its governing body and continues a legacy rooted in service, science, and social responsibility.
Dr. Potter's scholarly contributions focus on nurse caring, nursing education, leadership, and mental health. Notable publications include 'Nurse Caring: A Review of the Literature' (2013, co-authored with Joshua Fogel), 'A Mentoring Guide for Nursing Faculty in Higher Education' (2014, co-authored with Danita Tolson), 'Major Depression Disorder in Adults: A Review of Antidepressants' (2019), 'Caring for Vulnerable Populations During a Pandemic: Literature Review' (2020, co-authored), and 'The Global Leadership Mentoring Community: An Evaluation of its Impact on Nursing Leadership' (2023, co-authored with Elizabeth A.
