Professor Daphne Flynn is a Professor in the Department of Design, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at Monash University. She is the founding Co-Director of Design Health Collab since 2015. Daphne holds a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Design from RMIT University, awarded in 1984. Her extensive career in industry includes positions at Ogle Design and Philips Holdings Ltd as Industrial Designer (1985-1987), Satherley Design Associates as Design Consultant (1986-1988), Invetech as Senior Industrial Design Consultant, Design Manager (1990-2000), and Business Development Manager at Invetech Sdn Bhd (1996-1999), followed by 15 years at Philips Design in Asia-Pacific: Senior Account Design Manager in Taiwan (2000-2004), Design Manager and Director in Singapore (2005-2015). At Philips Singapore, she led user-centred design for remote patient monitoring and chronic disease management pilot programs in collaboration with a regional hospital group and the Ministry of Health.
Flynn's research focuses on design for health, design innovation, industrial design, human-centred design, co-design, co-creation, and participatory design. She supervises PhD projects on healthcare experience, future hospital, virtual care, health communication, and design for behavioural change. As Chief Investigator, she leads projects such as Paradigm: Rugged X-ray CT Scanner for Mobile Care Delivery (2025-2026), ARC Training Centre for Optimal Ageing (2023-2028), Self-service airport security checkpoint (2021-2026), and Asia-Pacific resilient hospitals and health facilities initiative (2024-2025). Key contributions include designing the award-winning asthma prediction device X-halo and Philips' Hospital-to-Home healthcare pilot. Recent publications include "Exploring the Nutrition Care Journey of People Living With Obesity in Acute Care" (Elliott et al., 2025, Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics), "Understanding and integrating the needs and preferences of people living with dementia in the inpatient setting: a qualitative study" (Lennox et al., 2025, BMC Geriatrics), "Reimagining patient-centered multimedia distraction strategies in the emergency department" (Macpherson et al., 2024), and "Security Self-Screening: A Passenger-Focused Approach" (Thiessen et al., 2024). Through Design Health Collab, Flynn promotes collaborations among researchers, industry, and medical bodies to innovate in healthcare using design thinking, improving medtech usability and patient experiences.
