David Audretsch is a Distinguished Professor and Ameritech Chair of Economic Development at Indiana University Bloomington's Paul H. O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, where he serves as Director of the Institute for Development Strategies. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship at the Kelley School of Business. In Business & Economics, his research has focused on the links between entrepreneurship, government policy, innovation, economic development, and global competitiveness. Audretsch earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin in 1980, an M.S. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin in 1979, and a B.A. in Economics, Magna Cum Laude, from Drew University in 1976. He holds a part-time professorship at the Department of Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship, University of Klagenfurt, Austria, and an honorary professorship of Industrial Economics and Entrepreneurship at WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management, Germany.
Audretsch previously served as Director of the Entrepreneurship, Growth and Public Policy Group at the Max Planck Institute of Economics from 2003 to 2009, Kauffman Scholar in Residence at the Marion Ewing Kauffman Foundation from 2006 to 2008, Research Professor at Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin fuer Sozialforschung from 1985 to 1997, and in other roles including Visiting Research Professor at Tinbergen Institute and Professor of Economics at Georgia State University. He has received the Clarivate Citation Laureate award in 2021, Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research from the Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum, Schumpeter Prize from the University of Wuppertal, Fellowship of the Academy of Management, and honorary doctorates from the University of Augsburg (2008), Jönköping University (2012), and University of Siegen (2018). Key publications include "R&D Spillovers and the Geography of Innovation and Production" (1996), "Innovation in Large and Small Firms: An Empirical Analysis" (1988), "The Knowledge Spillover Theory of Entrepreneurship" (2009), "Public Sector Innovation" (Cambridge University Press, 2024), and "The Seven Secrets of Germany" (Oxford University Press). Audretsch is founder and editor-in-chief of Small Business Economics: An Entrepreneurship Journal and has consulted for the World Bank, OECD, European Union, and United Nations.
