Professor David Bissell serves as Professor of Human Geography in the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Faculty of Science, at the University of Melbourne. He earned his PhD in Geography from Durham University between 2004 and 2008. His career at the University of Melbourne includes roles as Associate Professor and Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellow from 2017 to 2022, prior to his current professorship. Earlier employment includes a position at the Australian National University. Bissell's research specializations encompass cultural geography, affect, mobilities, work transformations, digital technologies, platform urbanism, gig economy dynamics, commuting experiences, and automation's societal impacts. He leads significant ARC-funded initiatives, such as the Discovery Project RISE: Reskilling for Inclusive and Sustainable Employment (DP250100067) and the Future Fellowship FT170100059.
Bissell's influential monograph, Transit Life: How Commuting Is Transforming Our Cities, was published by MIT Press in 2018, delving into the transformative effects of everyday transit on urban lives. Key publications also include 'Working in the gig economy is boring: Non-encounters and the affective atmospheres of contemporary urban work' (2022), 'A changing sense of place: Geography and COVID-19' (2021), and 'Embodying non-places: The drag of the human in a time of cognitive convenience' (2026). His work has garnered over 7,658 citations according to Google Scholar. In recognition of his contributions, Bissell was elected Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia in 2023. He holds the position of Managing Editor for Social & Cultural Geography and founded and chairs the steering committee of AusMob, the Australian Mobilities Research Network. Bissell contributes to public discourse through articles in Pursuit and The Conversation, as well as Agenda contributions for the World Economic Forum.
