About David

Professor David Brown is a Conjoint Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Westmead Clinical School and the Brain and Mind Centre. He earned his MBBS (Hons) from the University of New South Wales in 1989 and PhD from the same institution in 2003, followed by postdoctoral training at the Salk Institute. A specialist in immunology and immunopathology, he is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA). His clinical interests include the consequences of inflammatory diseases on the central nervous system, vasculitides, and treatment of connective tissue diseases.

Brown holds key positions as Director of the Institute of Clinical Pathology and Medical Research and Director of Immunopathology at NSW Health Pathology-ICPMR Westmead, Deputy Director of the Centre for Immunology and Allergy Research at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research, Senior Staff Specialist in Clinical Immunology at Westmead Hospital, and Clinical Professor at Westmead Clinical School. His research focuses on inflammation in chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, the role of immunity in cancer and neuroinflammatory diseases, and effects on the central nervous system in treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders. He has commercialised his research on GDF15 internationally and leads programs bridging neuroimmunology research with clinical trials for personalised treatments. Notable awards include NHMRC Career Development Fellowships (2013, 2009), NHMRC Neil Hamilton Fairley Training Fellowship (2003), National MS Society Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (2005), and Rick Hanson Difference Maker Award (2011).
