Dr. David Carlston is a professor of psychology at Midwestern State University, where he joined the faculty in 2004 as an assistant professor. He advanced through the ranks to associate professor and graduate program coordinator from 2009 to 2017, full professor from 2015 to 2025, interim chair of the Psychology Department from 2017 to 2018, and chair from 2018 to 2025. Currently serving as adjunct faculty, Carlston earned his B.S. in psychology from Brigham Young University, M.S. in clinical psychology from Ohio University, and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Ohio University. Throughout his tenure at Midwestern State University, he has taught a wide array of courses, including Clinical Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Research Methods and Outcome Assessment, Writing in Psychology, General Psychology, Practicum, and Internship courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
In recognition of his distinguished teaching and research, Carlston was named the 2018 Hardin Professor, the highest faculty honor at Midwestern State University, which includes a $4,000 stipend. He has published research in more than ten peer-reviewed journals and presented at over 60 professional meetings and conventions. Key publications include 'The prevalence of obesity documentation in primary care electronic medical records: Are we acknowledging the problem?' (Applied Clinical Informatics, 2017, with Mattar et al.), 'Benefits of student-generated note packets: A preliminary investigation of SQ3R Implementation' (Teaching of Psychology, 2011), 'Age, gender, and ethnicity effects on parent-child discrepancy using identical measures' (Journal of Child and Family Studies, 2009, with Ogles), 'Exploratory analysis of patients’ motivations to quit smoking and participate in smoking cessation classes' (Family Medicine, 2012, with Packard and Mattar), and 'The role of fidelity and feedback in the wraparound approach' (Journal of Child and Family Studies, 2006, with Ogles et al.). His scholarly work addresses clinical psychology topics such as obesity documentation, smoking cessation, parent-child behavioral reports, and mental health interventions.
