About David

Associate Professor David Liu is a prominent surgeon and researcher affiliated with the University of Melbourne's Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, Department of Surgery. He earned his MBBS (Hons) from the University of Melbourne in 2007, along with a BMedSc and PhD in 2017 from the same institution. Liu is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and holds fellowship status with the Australasian Association of Neurogastroenterology and Oesophago-Gastric Surgeons (FAANZGOSA). Currently, he practices as an oesophago-gastric and general surgeon at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Austin Health. Within the University of Melbourne, he serves as Associate Professor, leads the General and Gastrointestinal Surgery Research Group, and collaborates with the Tumourigenesis and Cancer Therapeutics Laboratory at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

Liu's academic interests center on translational biology, service innovation, and clinical research to enhance outcomes for patients with gastro-oesophageal cancers. He leads multiple clinical trials investigating circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), pathological responses to chemotherapy, and other biomarkers. With over 100 publications, notable works include 'Peritoneal Tumor DNA as a Prognostic Biomarker in Gastric Cancer' (2024, Journal of Clinical Oncology Precision Oncology), 'Pathological Response Predicts Efficacy of Adjuvant FLOT Chemotherapy in Gastroesophageal Cancer: An International Cohort Study' (2023), and 'A Practical Approach to Interpreting Circulating Tumor DNA in the Management of Gastrointestinal Cancers' (2022). His research has secured substantial funding, and he received the Victorian Cancer Agency Cancer Research Training Fellowship in 2016 as a joint winner for rising cancer research stars, as well as the Dean's Award from the University of Melbourne in 2001. Liu's contributions have significantly influenced clinical practices in upper gastrointestinal oncology through advanced diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
