David Morris is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture and Built Environment within the College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities at Adelaide University. Formerly a Senior Lecturer in the School of Art, Architecture and Design at the University of South Australia, Morris has made significant contributions to architectural education as the Director of the Student Design and Construction Program. This program, which he initiated, is Australasia's longest-running accredited design-build initiative, having provided hands-on experiential learning opportunities to more than 800 students over 25 years. Students engage in real-world projects, including the design and construction of prototypes for remote Indigenous housing, emphasizing student-centered learning, innovative curricula, and practical skills development in architecture.
Morris's research specializes in housing for remote Australian Indigenous communities, focusing on residents' experiences and aspirations, design frameworks, flexible guidelines, consultation and negotiation practices, policy synthesis, and sustainable housing systems. These systems incorporate culturally responsive design, eco-efficiency, healthy living practices, housing-related training and employment, life-cycle costing, and innovations in procurement, ownership, and construction. His key publications include 'Life on the edge: Housing experiences in three remote Australian indigenous settlements' (2011), 'Towards a design framework for remote Indigenous housing' (AHURI Final Report No. 114, 2008), 'Flexible guidelines for the design of remote Indigenous community housing' (2007), 'Sitting down and talking it through: how consultation can lead to better designed environments for remote indigenous communities', and 'A new design framework for remote Indigenous housing'. With 54 citations across these works, Morris has influenced policy and practice in Indigenous housing. He has received the 2015 Australian Awards for University Teaching Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in the category of Innovation in Curricula, Learning and Teaching for the Student Design and Construction Program, UniSA Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, and recognition for innovative approaches to architectural education. In 2019, he was named a Fellow by the Australian Institute of Architects SA Chapter. As a practicing architect, his projects are documented in the Architecture Museum collections at Adelaide University.
