Dr David Paull serves as Honorary Senior Lecturer in Geography within the School of Science at UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales. He earned a Master of Arts from the University of Adelaide and a PhD from UNSW. His research spans biogeography, wildlife ecology and biological conservation, geomorphology, photogrammetry and remote sensing, and environmental management, with a particular emphasis on threatened species such as medium-sized ground-dwelling mammals, including Australian bandicoots and bilbies. Paull has applied advanced techniques like drones, GIS, and digital photogrammetry to monitor environmental impacts, including feral horse-induced erosion in the Australian Alps and streambank degradation in Kosciuszko National Park. He previously held the position of Senior Lecturer in the School of Physical, Environmental and Mathematical Sciences, where he taught courses such as Conservation Biogeography, Geographic Information Analysis, Applications in GIS and Remote Sensing, Global Environmental Change, and Ecological Biogeography. Paull has supervised numerous Higher Degree Research students to completion.
Paull's scholarly output includes one book, 14 book chapters, 86 journal articles, 31 conference papers, and various reports. Notable contributions encompass multiple chapters in the 2023 edition of Strahan's Mammals of Australia, such as 'Order Peramelemorphia: Bandicoots and Bilbies' and entries on specific families and species like the Southern Brown Bandicoot. Recent peer-reviewed publications feature 'Comparative effects of intermittent and continuous simulated rainstorms on rill erosion based on photogrammetry' (Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, 2024), 'A digital close range photogrammetric observation system for measuring soil surface morphology during ongoing rainfall' (Journal of Hydrology, 2023), 'Assessing sensitivity to climate-related disasters in the context of a developing country: Evidence from the coastal region of Bangladesh' (International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, 2023), and 'Assessing multi-climate-hazard threat in the coastal region of Bangladesh by combining influential environmental and anthropogenic factors' (Progress in Disaster Science, 2022). His research has secured competitive grants totaling over $170,000, including $54,000 from the Australian Alps Liaison Committee for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to measure wild horse impacts (2016-2018), $75,000 from Defence Support Group for automated monitoring (2012), and $18,000 for real-time structure-from-motion using UAVs (2014). These efforts have advanced wildlife conservation, geomorphic process understanding, and disaster risk assessment methodologies.
