Dr. David L. Shabazz is the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and an Associate Professor of Communication at Kentucky State University, where he has served on the faculty since August 2003. He holds a B.A. from Benedict College, an M.A. in Communication from the University of South Carolina, an M.A. Ed. from Wake Forest University, and a Ph.D. from Regent University. His doctoral dissertation, completed in 2019, is titled 'Communication, An Exploration of Viewers' Motivations and Social Interactions Before, During and After Watching the Super Bowl on Television.' In his leadership role, Dr. Shabazz oversees five schools within the College of Arts and Sciences: the School of Education, School of Humanities, School of Social Work, School of Criminal Justice and Government Relations, and School of Psychology. Previously, he served as chair of the Division of Literature, Languages and Philosophy and associate chair in the School of the Humanities and Performing Arts. He teaches introductory journalism courses, as well as classes in radio, podcasting, and photography.
Dr. Shabazz's research focuses on African American communication, sports communication, popular culture, human communication from socio-cultural and socio-psychological perspectives, social criticism, and identity. His scholarly contributions include peer-reviewed articles such as 'Examining Community Journalism at Kentucky State University: Using Student Feedback for Implementing Best Classroom Practices' (2024, Journal of Media Education), '“Got a Radio Show”: The Influence of Steve Harvey’s Morning Ministry on Secular Radio Audiences' (2024, Journal of Radio and Audio Media), and 'Barbershops as Cultural Forums for African American Males' (2016, Journal of Black Studies). His excellence in teaching and advising has earned him the Educator of the Year award in 2019 from the Kentucky Communication Association and the Broadcast Adviser of the Year in 2020 from the College Media Association. Additionally, he has received awards for newspaper columns from the Society of Professional Journalists and for scriptwriting from the Broadcast Education Association.
