About David

Professor David Shallcross is a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Melbourne, within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering and a PhD, both from the University of Melbourne. Prior to joining the University of Melbourne, he worked at the University of California, Davis, and Stanford University. Throughout his career at Melbourne, he has held several leadership positions, including Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering for six years, Deputy Dean (Academic) in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, Vice-President of the Academic Board from 2023 to 2024, and currently serves as President of the Academic Board since 1 January 2025. Professor Shallcross is recognized as one of the foremost practitioners in chemical engineering education worldwide. He has collaborated with colleagues across many countries to enhance student and educational experiences in the field.

His research interests include chemical engineering education, ion exchange, and psychrometry. Professor Shallcross is the Founding Editor of the Elsevier journal Education for Chemical Engineers. He has authored key books such as Chemical Engineering Explained: Basic Concepts for Novices (2018) and Petroleum Engineering Explained: Basic Concepts for Novices (2020), aimed at introducing fundamental concepts to novices and non-specialists. His contributions to the profession have earned him prestigious awards, including the Chemeca Medal in 2024, the highest honour in chemical engineering across Australia and New Zealand, and the IChemE Council Medal in 2013 for a major contribution to the Institution of Chemical Engineers. These accolades highlight his significant impact on chemical engineering education and practice.
