About David

David Skellern is an Adjunct Professor at Macquarie University in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He previously served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Electronics at Macquarie University from 1989 to 2003. Skellern earned a B.Sc. in Pure Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics from the University of Sydney in 1972, a B.E. (Hons) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Sydney in 1974, and a Ph.D. from the University of Sydney in 1985. His early career included work in radio astronomy for ten years and teaching electronics at the University of Sydney and Macquarie University.

Skellern co-founded Radiata in 1997, where his team, building on collaborative research with CSIRO and Neil Weste at Macquarie University, demonstrated the world’s first chip-set implementation of the IEEE 802.11a high-speed WLAN standard. Radiata was acquired by Cisco Systems in 2001, after which Skellern served as Director of Technology in Cisco’s Wireless Networking Business Unit until 2004. He later held leadership roles including Chief Executive Officer of National ICT Australia from 2005 to 2010 and Chairman in 2011. Skellern is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and an Honorary Fellow of Engineers Australia. His honors include the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2012, the 2017 IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award, the 2010 M.A. Sargent Medal, the Clunies Ross Award, and an honorary doctorate from Macquarie University in 2012. He has held visiting appointments at institutions including Imperial College London and currently serves as Chair of several organizations including ICRAR and S3B. Professional Email: null
