Dr Debbie Waddell is a senior lecturer in the Specialist Nursing and Midwifery team at the University of the West of Scotland Lanarkshire Campus. Coming from a community nursing background, she contributes to post-registration programmes and serves as module leader for the MSc Research in Health and Social Care and MSc Dissertation modules. She also supervises MSc students and contributes to the BSc Adult Nursing programme. Dr Waddell holds a PhD from Glasgow Caledonian University, along with Pg CAP, PgCert Research, BA (Hons), RGN and FHEA qualifications. Her research career began with doctoral work applying Normalisation Process Theory to explore implementation of the CAUTI care bundle from the perspectives of NHS Scotland acute sector staff. Research expertise includes healthcare-associated infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infection, patient experiences and quality of life, implementation science, quality improvement, and qualitative research methods. Key publications include co-authored work on the impact of practice on quality of life for those living with an indwelling urinary catheter, published in Urologic Nursing in 2023, and a cross-sectional study on the quality of life of patients living with a urinary catheter in Egypt, published in Healthcare in 2023. Additional contributions appear in The Lancet Infectious Diseases in 2018 on the effectiveness of infection prevention and control interventions, and a 2017 commissioned report on quality prescribing for the Scottish Reduction in Antimicrobial Prescribing programme. Dr Waddell has also contributed to studies examining hand hygiene practices and antimicrobial stewardship in community and acute settings.
