About Deli

Professor Deli Chen is a Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor and Professor of Soil Science in the School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Sciences, Faculty of Science, at the University of Melbourne. He earned his PhD in Soil Science from the University of Melbourne and has over 40 years of experience in soil research, teaching, and consulting. As Discipline Leader of the Soil and Environment Research Group and Director of the ARC Research Hub for Smart Fertilisers, he directs multidisciplinary research on enhancing nitrogen fertiliser efficiency to support sustainable agriculture, farm profitability, and environmental health. His career includes prior roles such as Head of the Crop and Soil Section.

Professor Chen specializes in water and nutrient dynamics in plant-soil systems, GIS-based agroecosystem modelling, decision support systems for optimal irrigation and fertiliser management, greenhouse gas emission measurement, modelling, and mitigation, and big data applications for agricultural sustainability indices. An internationally recognized authority on nitrogen use efficiency and its effects on food security, climate change, and the environment, he has developed innovative techniques for soil nitrogen transformation analysis, high-efficiency fertilisers, and emission reduction strategies from crop and livestock systems. These advancements have been adopted globally by industry and governments, significantly influencing agro-environmental sciences. His accolades include the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2024, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA) in 2025, 2024 IFA Norman Borlaug Plant Nutrition Award, JA Prescott Medal, Kingenta Agricultural Science Award, and Honorary Life Membership of Soil Science Australia. He holds fellowships from the American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America, and Soil Science Australia. With over 400 publications garnering more than 23,000 citations, Professor Chen's work underscores his profound academic impact.
