Denilson Barbosa is a Professor of Computing Science at the University of Alberta, where he also serves as Associate Dean (Undergraduate) for the Faculty of Science since February 2023. He holds a BSc in Computer Science from the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (1996), an MSc from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1999), and a PhD from the University of Toronto (2005), with his doctoral thesis titled “Incremental Validation of XML Documents and Mappings” under the supervision of Alberto O. Mendelzon. His academic career began as an Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary (2005-2008), followed by his appointment at the University of Alberta as Assistant Professor and Ingenuity New Faculty (2008-2011), and subsequently as Associate Professor (2011-present), achieving full professorship. Barbosa was a lead researcher with the Scotiabank Artificial Intelligence Research Initiative and co-PI on projects including LINCS – Linked Open Data for Canadian Cultural Research and the NSERC Business Intelligence Network, where he led the Data Quality Theme.
His research specializations encompass data management, knowledge graphs and linked open data, social network analysis, information retrieval, and natural language processing. Barbosa has co-authored dozens of peer-reviewed articles in premier venues such as SIGMOD, ICDE, and NAACL, along with the book Perspectives on Business Intelligence (Morgan & Claypool Publishers, 2013). Notable publications include “Knowledge Graph Embedding for Link Prediction: A Comparative Analysis” (ACM TKDD, 2021), “ToXgene: An extensible template-based data generator for XML” (SIGMOD, 2002), and “Efficient Incremental Validation of XML Documents” (ICDE, 2004). He has supervised 10 PhD students, 19 MSc students, and 3 postdoctoral fellows, many of whom now hold positions at leading tech companies and research institutions. Among his honors are the Alberta Ingenuity New Faculty Award (2006), IBM Faculty Award (2005), Best Paper Award at the 2010 IEEE International Conference on Data Engineering, and supervision of winners in the 2017 TextExt-DBpedia Open Extraction Challenge and the 2012 ACM SIGMOD Best Undergraduate Poster. Barbosa has contributed extensively to the field through leadership as President of the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Association (2023-2024), associate editorships for journals like IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (2015-2018), and program committee co-chair roles for conferences including the 28th Canadian Conference on Artificial Intelligence and ACM SIGMOD Workshops on Databases and Social Networks. He held visiting positions as Scientist at the Max-Planck Institute for Informatics (2014-2015) and Professor at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (2008).
