Dennis Sinnett is Chair of the School of Aviation at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), where he also serves as Associate Chair, Director of Aviation, and Executive Director of the Center for Aviation. A former U.S. Navy pilot who reached the rank of Captain, Sinnett possesses substantial experience in naval aviation, including flying various aircraft types. He holds a Master's degree in Aeronautical Science, specializing in Aviation and Aerospace Management (with Honors and Distinction), from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, completed between 1992 and 1996. In his roles at EKU, Sinnett has overseen the growth of the aviation program to 463 students, contributing to efforts to address the national commercial pilot shortage through advanced flight training and academic preparation. The program, an FAA Part 141 approved flight school and the only one in Kentucky authorized for the 1000-hour Restricted Airline Transport Pilot certificate, offers a Bachelor of Science in Aviation with concentrations in Professional Flight, Aerospace Management, Aerospace Technology, and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).
Sinnett presented a video and program overview to the EKU Board of Regents in 2019 as Associate Chair of EKU Aviation. He has led the development of EKU's innovative UAS program, equipping students with skills in UAS operations, safety, regulations, and mission planning for industries such as agriculture, public safety, and infrastructure inspection. Recognized as a drone and aviation expert, Sinnett addressed mysterious drone sightings at a 2025 Board of Regents meeting. In response to a 2025 tornado, he organized aviation faculty and staff to collect and deliver relief donations to victims. Sinnett has spoken at events like the KBT Aviation Symposium, testified before Kentucky legislative task forces on aviation and workforce issues, and facilitated partnerships enhancing pathways for aviation students. His leadership supports EKU's mission in producing highly trained pilots and aviation professionals.
